Cards Red Hot Spring
A Promising Sign
The St. Louis Cardinals are having a great spring training thus far. All fans are hoping that the skills that they have seen will carry over into the regular season. The pitching, young talent and offensive explosions that were seemingly lacking last season have all appeared in Jupiter, Florida this year. With the season in a few weeks, fans are all hoping that this year ends better than the last.
The Cardinals have already dealt with their fair share of injuries this preseason. With players like Trevor Rosenthal, Aledmys Diaz and Matt Carpenter going down with injuries, more young talent is getting their chance. With all three of them set to make a return before opening day, the team should have their full arsenal come April 2.
The offense seen this spring is extremely encouraging. The team has not seen this kind of hitting in quite a few years. The power, averages and RBIs have all been high and consistent. Scoring more then five runs in over 50% of spring games so far is a sign that the team is clicking. The entire lineup has been hitting and coming up big in converting those scoring chances.
The pitchers are working out their off-season rust and trying new things. They will keep the team in the games and hope that the offense is able to finish them out. The bullpen will be the Cardinals’ saving grace this season. Having players like Rosenthal and Seung-hwan Oh makes any lead the Cardinals have going into later innings a scary one. The Cards also have plenty of extremely talented men who can carry the weight if the starters struggle.
The young talent that has shown up this spring is one of the more encouraging aspects of the team this season. Some of the young guns and rookies from last year are also having a fantastic preseason in their sophomore season. Players like Jose Martinez in the outfield, even if not on the starting roster, has been one of the brightest young stars in the system. Also, players like Aledmys Diaz and Tommy Pham have been showing off their off season work with some pretty stellar spring trainings of their own.
These young players who are having great springs also have exceptional veterans to teach them. Dexter Fowler in the outfield is a good person to look to for leadership. Players like Yadier Molina, Johnny Peralta and Matt Carpenter lead and teach these young players, so in future years they will be great.
The Cardinals’ spring is encouraging to say the least, and fans should be excited knowing things are looking good. Young players are showing up to play, pitching is working out kinks and veterans are looking as good as ever. Overall, the team is looking great. Starting out the season against the Cubs on April 2 will be a great challenge that you won’t want to miss.
