It’s Morphin’ Time for the Power Rangers Squad
The Power Rangers franchise just had it’s biggest installment to date with Power Rangers, the 2017 movie that was released on March 24. With over 20 different TV shows and two feature films, the infamous superhero group just received a modern twist with a great cast and story.
The new film tried to step away from it’s original whimsical nature to focus on a more grounded plot. Aside from a few big names in the rest of the cast, the Rangers themselves boast a unique and not so famous cast.
Dacre Montgomery stars as the Red Ranger (Jason Scott), with just a few small roles previous to this movie. RJ Cycler plays the Blue Ranger (Billy Cranston), and he had a role in the movie Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Naomi Scott stars as the Pink Ranger (Kimberly Hart), Becky G the singer stars as the Yellow Ranger (Trini Kwan) and Ludi Lin portrays the Black Ranger (Zack Taylor). Saturday Night Live comedian Bill Hader voiced the robot assistant Alpha 5, Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad played Zordon and Elizabeth Banks is the main villain named Rita Repulsa.
St. Dominic teacher Ms. Moutray, a fellow fan of the franchise, already has some excitement built up.
“I am excited for it! I think it’s because I remember being a really big fan of the Power Rangers when I was younger, and nowadays they are coming out with all these remake movies of old films that make me feel like a kid again. Just like Beauty and the Beast,” said Moutray.
Without giving anything away, the plot served as an easy to follow origin story. Loosely based on the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie and show, viewers follow the teenagers in high school, before any of them know each other. These five misfits of sorts meet up by chance and experience what no one has for millions of years. An evil force has awakened, and the ancient Red Ranger Zordon must serve as a mentor to the new age of Earth defenders. Facing struggles along the way, the group comes to learn that it is more important to trust each other like family, rather than argue about who gets their armor first.
Since the Power Rangers have been iconic to me since my childhood, it is something that I knew I would judge harshly. The movie certainly exceeded my expectations. Sure, there were some plot holes, one or two incredibly corny lines and a poor CGI scene here or there, but when you look past that, you’ll find a great story with themes of anti-bullying, acceptance and teamwork. If you are a fan of the shows or movies from the past, you are 100% sure to get the references in this current movie.
If you are a fan of the Mighty Morphin or not, be sure to go see Power Rangers, as it is a great superhero movie and an awesome story about accepting others for who they really are!
