Leading Through Your Last Year
Senior year is full of exciting new opportunities that underclassmen can look forward to. At St. Dominic, we are fortunate enough to have three primary roles for seniors to apply for: senior advisory, peer ministry or student council. You can’t go wrong with applying for any of them.
Senior Advisory
If you enjoy leading small groups, sharing advice, showing creativity and have an outgoing personality, then senior advisory is the perfect choice. You will grow in your skills as a leader, but you will also grow closer with freshman, who you may not have interacted with otherwise. The advisory program covers an array of topics from bullying to self image to chivalry. Advisories participate in fun activities such as games like kickball and dodgeball as well as many artistic challenges such as pumpkin decorating contests. Senior advisors have a lasting impact on the freshman and are rewarded with memories that last a lifetime.
“I have really enjoyed advisory because it gives me something to look forward to everyday. It is also a chance to be a bigger part of the St. Dominic community,” said senior advisor Kyle Koenig.
Peer Ministry
Peer ministry is the perfect fit for seniors who live out their faith in their everyday lives and hope to inspire others to grow closer to God. Peer ministers get the opportunity to share their faith everyday and lead retreats, masses and prayer services for the school community. You don’t need to be the loudest singer at mass or the person with the most service hours to be a peer minister; all it takes is a genuine love for God and others. In addition to helping others grow in faith, peer ministers grow closer together as a group and create lasting relationships with each other.
“You have the chance to better yourself, improve your faith life and strengthen your own faith through working with others on their faith,” said peer minister Kaitlyn Pulliam.
Student Council
Student council is an opportunity for all grades at St. Dominic, but seniors vote for two teams. One team is elected as class officers, who lead the senior class, and the other team, the executive team, oversees all of student council and school activities. As seniors in student council, you have a chance to lead all school events and take care of the school community. You will also learn essential leadership skills such as organizing events, working in a group environment, meeting deadlines and being open to other people’s ideas. If you are looking to better the school community, then apply for student council.
“I have really been impacted by Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Zilka’s advice and knowledge. I can’t thank them enough for mentoring me. The other students are really incredible people and have given me memories that will last a lifetime,” said student council president Tyler Johnson.
Underclassmen should become involved with their community during their senior year because these are the times that you will remember. These year-long involvements will impact your life and give you a chance to leave your mark on St. Dominic.
