Decisions, Decisions: New Courses For Next Year

With a wide array of new courses being added to St. Dominic’s curriculum, students are anticipating the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. From Debate/Drama to Computer Science to Lifetime Fitness, there’s sure to be something for everyone!

Over the duration of the past year, teachers have been filling out proposals for possible new classes and submitting them to the school administration for review. When deciding which classes to add, factors such as college credit, number of pre-existing courses in that department and student interest level were all carefully examined. Once a course got approved, it was added to the course booklet. If enough students enroll in it, it becomes a new permanent class.

“Overall, we have to see how beneficial or not beneficial a course will be for the entire student body,” said college guidance counselor Mrs. Darla Strecker.

New courses for next year include Psychology II AP, Honors Chemistry II and Computer Science. They will better prepare students for the future by helping them determine what they would like to study in college. New electives like Debate/Drama and Lifetime Fitness give students the chance to have fun exploring their personal interests.

Although it will not be offered this coming summer, St. Dominic is entertaining the possibility of offering certain required classes over the summer. This would allow students the opportunity to take other interesting courses that pertain to what they want to study in college during the school year. In the future, students may be getting classes like Health and Personal Financial Management out of the way before the year begins!

Any effort to make school more interesting by adding new courses is a good thing. If you want to add a new course, find a teacher who will propose your idea. With so many new options this year, it will be easier than ever for students to customize their curriculum and make their school year the best possible!
