Gifts Under $10: A Guide for Broke Teens

As the holiday season of gift giving approaches, I find myself facing a common problem. I want to give everyone I love a gift, but have little money to do so. To conquer this problem, I have put together a list of gifts that cost $10 or less. Here is what I found:

  • e.l.f. Cosmetics: $2+

Any girl will tell you that makeup is expensive, but e.l.f. offers decent quality products for very low costs. You can find e.l.f. products at Target, Walmart and pharmacies such as CVS. From small eye shadow palettes to lipsticks, grabbing a few products to make a small makeup bundle would be an appreciated gift.

  • Photo Album Filled with Pictures: $0.29/photo

Printed photos are always a nice, personal gift, especially now that all of our photos are on a screen. At Walgreens prints are 29¢ per photo, and you can find simple photo albums for as little as $1. If you would rather spend more on pictures and save on the album, creating your own with sheets of printer or construction paper would be a simple task.

  • Political Toilet Paper: $5-$10

Everyone has that one politically outspoken friend. Get them a gift that will really let them express their feelings towards their least favorite politician. With hot-button politicians available, there’s toilet paper for everyone. Of course, you can buy these classy gifts at Walmart.

  • Small Moleskine Notebook: $5+

Moleskines are high quality notebooks that any writer, journaler, doodler or planner will love. At Barnes & Noble you can get a set of three (3.5 x 5.5) soft cover notebooks for $10. By themselves or paired with new colored pencils or pens, this is a great thrifty gift option.

  • Small Lego Set: $7-$10

For the friend who never got over their childhood obsession with Legos, this will be the perfect gift for them to get their building-block fix. Pick one up at Barnes & Noble or Toys “R” Us.

  • Adult Coloring Book: $3+

Any creative person on your list will love to receive a more sophisticated version of this childhood classic. From mandalas, to cityscapes and intricately designed cats, this fun and destressing activity is a great gift. Head to Michaels arts and crafts store to pick one up!

  • Candles: $4.50

Bath & Body Works has a great selection of wonderfully scented candles. They will cost you $4.50 each or three for $12. A sweet and useful gift can be bought on a budget!

  • Portable Phone Charger: $10

Between Snapchat, Twitter and texting, people are constantly in need of longer battery life. A portable charger would be a useful and welcome gift for the phone addict on your list. Check out Target and Best Buy for the best selection.

  • Lotions: $5

A Bath & Body Works classic any girl or guy (yes, they have scents for men) will appreciate during these winter months. Their lotions are $5 each or three for $12. Bath & Body Works runs sales frequently too, so keep your eyes open to get a great gift deal.

  • 1,000 Pennies: $10

Everyone would love to have an extra $10 in their pocket. Also, this gift will help your friends and family practice their math skills.

  • The Nest Earbud Case: $10

Another practical technology solution is the Nest Earbud Case. Its unique design is hassle free and allows you to store your earbuds without the tangles. How revolutionary! Pick one up for your friend (or yourself) at Walmart or on Amazon.

  • Magazine Subscriptions: $25-$30

Okay, this one is more than $10. This made the list because for only 50¢ an issue you give a gift that keeps giving all year long with a subscription to any magazine that interests them. From Sports Illustrated, to Rolling Stone, People, Time and more, this is a great gift.

With all these ideas in mind, remember that it truly is the thought that counts and when in doubt, gift card it out.
