SDHS Swim Team Dives Into A New Season
The St. Dominic ladies’ swim team finished with an amazing season last year. Now, the girls are diving headfirst into this new season, literally. With the new addition of the diving team and the help of coach Ms. Jacquie Moutray, the swim ladies have qualified for five state events in just five meets.
The Rec Plex was packed on Wednesday, December 7, as St. Dominic students cheered on our swim team.
The once under-appreciated sport has become popular as the ladies’ swim team proves they are working hard in and out of the pool. Junior Sarah Nelson has qualified for the 100 free, the 200 IM and 100 fly and freshman Kate Nelson has qualified for the 100 breast. The Nelson sisters, along with junior Madeline Stransky and senior Alexis Liszweski, have teamed up to qualify for the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay. The excitement is only building as the season continues and fans cheer on the swimmers with the hopes of qualifying for more state events. However, another group of athletes have also attracted a crowd: the divers.
This is the first season St. Dominic has had a diving team. The new addition has helped the swimmers rack up points and showcase their talents in another category. The diving team is small but mighty with only two girls, junior Annie Neumann and senior Bailey McNamee. The new team attracted both experienced and non-experienced divers.
“I joined the diving team because Ms. Moutray was telling all of the girls to join the diving team because they didn’t have any divers last year. I thought it sounded fun and since it is senior year, I figured I might as well try something new,” said McNamee.
The diving team is definitely a great addition to the SDHS swim program. Neumann won at the Borgia swim meet, making Dominic proud.
The SDHS ladies’ swim team is growing in numbers and accomplishments each year. The girls have put in the work and it has paid off. Make sure you make it to the Rec Plex for the next meet on January 7 to watch the SDHS swimmers and divers make a splash.
