Sail of the Century
Disney has blown it out of the water with Moana. The film follows a Polynesian princess as she sets out on a quest to save her village. Plot twist: Moana is not your stereotypical princess. She does not need a prince to sweep her off of her feet and she is not fighting an evil villain. The story line is based on Polynesian culture and sends a powerful message about finding yourself and being who you want to be.
The story revolves around the tale of the demigod Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson, and the goddess of creation Te Fiti. Maui stole the heart of Te Fiti, killing her and cursing all of the Polynesian islands. Maui was banished to an island and the heart of Te Fiti was lost at sea. The legend says that a warrior will be chosen to find Maui and restore the heart of Te Fiti, the warrior being Moana.
Moana, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho, is the daughter of the Chief, and she is expected to spend her time preparing to fill her father’s shoes. However, Moana’s obsession with the ocean gets in the way of her chiefly duties. Suddenly, Moana’s island falls under the curse of Te Fiti. Moana’s grandmother tells her that the ocean chose her to be the warrior by giving her the heart of Te Fiti as a baby. Moana finally understands her obsession with the ocean as a calling to save her people. Defying her father, Moana sets sail to find Maui and return the heart of Te Fiti.
The story of Moana is an inspiring tale filled with laughter and tears. She joins forces with Maui and they face many obstacles along the way including a greedy crab and the volcanic monster Te Ka. Moana surprises Maui and she saves him from the clutches of evil, proving that she is not a damsel in distress. The story line of Moana strays from typical Disney clichés. There is no love interest and no evil villain. Moana saves her village with the inspiration of her grandmother who helps her discover who she truly is.
Moana is a heartwarming story that is loved by audiences of all ages. She shows that by following our dreams we can discover who we truly are. I give Moana 10/10 stars. Disney created a must-see film that will surely leave you wanting more.
