“Bah! Humbug!” is a phrase of the past. Director Mrs. Melfreya Findley and the cast of A Christmas Carol took a new take on this year’s classic Christmas production.

Mrs. Findley’s vision for this new translation of an old time classic was inspired by the 33 high school girls that signed up to audition for the show. A “New” Christmas Carol was set in a downtown district some 150 years after the traditional story of Ebenezer Scrooge and featured women as the main characters.

A “New” Christmas Carol followed the life of Ebbie Hollywell, played by sophomore Grace Wallis, who was a toy shop owner with a hate for anything involving Christmas. Hollywell’s great-great-great-great-uncle Scrooge appeared to her to warn her to not live a life like he had lived and to tell her that she still had a chance to change her fate. She was visited by three ghosts who took her through her past, present and future.

Sophomore Lori Cook, senior Sophie Kluba and sophomore Jackie Lang portrayed the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future that took Hollywell on the whirlwind adventure that ultimately changed her life. The three ghosts took the appearance of a Christmas angel, Mrs. Claus and Jackie Frost and they taught Hollywell to live in the past, the present and the future.

The cast and crew worked hard to put the show together in very limited rehearsal times.

“With only 15 rehearsals, the cast and crew came together as a family to make a fantastic show for our audience to enjoy,” said junior Kaitlyn Pepper who played the part of Hollywell’s niece, Frieda.

Everyone involved in the show worked together to overcome challenges that they faced leading up to the performances.

“During the middle of one of the performances, our light board operator got sick and had to go home. Although finding a replacement was hectic and somewhat nerve wrecking, the stage crew stepped it up to work around the challenge and finished the show to the best of their ability,” said senior and stage manager Emily Siegfried.

This new take on an old classic was a great success. The cast and crew were phenomenal and being a part of this production was amazing. I have no doubt that Mrs. Findley and the St. Dominic theatre department will put together an even greater twist on the show in the coming years.
