‘Tis the Season: Family, Friends, Deer

‘Tis the season — deer season, that is. Although many people hunt for food, conservation and recreation, the overwhelming purpose for the hunt at St. Dominic is to continue family tradition. The festivities of late fall and early winter begin with families coming together in this unique way to create a bond that lasts a lifetime.

Before the craziness of the holidays officially begins, deer season gives hunters a chance to escape the hustle and bustle. The serenity in the deer stands, matched with the adrenaline rush of a white-tail walking into range, creates a bond all hunters share. Through years of deer seasons, strangers become friends, friends become family and families’ bonds are strengthened through hunting.

“It’s a huge bonding day for my dad and I. Since I am always gone for volleyball, when we go on an all-day hunt we like to catch up and make it a dad and daughter day. It brings tears to his eyes when I’m not able to spend that time with him,” said senior Alaina Rothermich.

The tradition of deer season has left many anxiously waiting for November to arrive. The anticipation of the season takes St. Dominic by storm.

“I’ve been waiting for deer season all year. I took off work two months in advance to make sure I will be able to go hunting,” said senior Max Moellering.

The anticipation helps strengthen the unwavering bond that hunting creates for families. Memories made during the hunt last for a lifetime.

“When I got my first deer, my dad was standing right next to me and congratulated me. When I got it he reached over and gave me a big hug — just a really special moment,” said sophomore Nick Bone.

For my family, deer season brought an entire extended family into our lives. The farmer who lets my family hunt on his property is known as “Uncle Neb.” They do not accept any money for the use of the land; instead, we do a few chores for them and help with the harvest. Every year the farmer’s young granddaughters come to our deer lodge to have their height marked down on the plywood walls — leaving their mark inch by inch. The simplicities of life and little moments we normally take for granted are what make the season so special.

At St. Dominic, hunting season is more than providing food or clearing out the herd; it is about building a bond…a tradition made with family and friends that will last a lifetime. Take time for the hunt this season and spend this time with your family.
