The Death of Twitter?

At ten years old, revolutionary social media platform Twitter is going through growing pains. Twitter was previously seeking to sell the enterprise, but when big name buyers such as Google and Disney backed out, Twitter’s stocks dropped dramatically. Will this lead to Twitter’s downfall?

Since its establishment, Twitter has gone through many changes from being able to embed links, pictures and video, to exchanging “favorites” for “likes” and reworking how users can quote tweets. Like most things, these changes have come with mixed reviews. Every time rumors of expanding Twitter’s trademark character limit surface, an uproar from the Twitter community ensues.

There is a fine line for social media CEOs and developers to walk. They must progress and advance, yet keep the integrity of their platform. If they fail to keep up, they will be banished to the depths of the Internet alongside MySpace. With the explosion of social media in the last 10 years, we have seen the rise and fall of many popular sites. For example, Facebook used to be massively popular. While it hasn’t died out, many young teens and new social media users are choosing not to join. Even Instagram has had a fallout, which is being battled by allowing non-square pictures, GIFs and stories. Even Snapchat has changed, with the addition of the explore page and filters.

Despite the recent shakeup to Twitter’s image, the user base is alive and well. If they acquire a new owner, there are sure to be changes. This will either lead to Twitter’s death or cement it in the social media hall of fame. Only time will tell Twitter’s destiny.
