Trump or Clinton? But Wait, There’s More

The presidential election of 2016 will certainly be one that goes down in the history books, no matter the outcome. Candidates Donald Trump (R) and Hillary Clinton (D) have the country more divided than ever before. Those who support Trump or Clinton are deeply entrenched in their viewpoints, and many have hatred for the other candidate. However, many Americans dislike both candidates and are voting based on who they don’t want in office instead of who they do. From Internet memes to personal attacks and PR blunders from both sides, plenty of voters are wishing they had other options.

Despite being a two-party system, our representative democracy allows for political parties other than Democratic and Republican parties imageto nominate candidates for the presidency. Despite receiving little to no media coverage, both the Green Party and the Libertarian Party have candidates running in the 2016 election. Though a third party candidate has never won the presidency, if there was ever a year to consider outside options, 2016 is the year.

The Libertarian Party’s presidential nominee is Gary Johnson. Johnson’s experience includes businessman, governor of New Mexico and Libertarian presidential candidate in 2012. Most political analysts regard Johnson’s views as conservative in policy and finances but socially liberal. He currently stands at 6.9% in national polls (USA Today).

imageThe Green Party nominated Jill Stein as their candidate for the presidency. Stein is a physician and activist with particular concern about the environment. Stein has never held state or federal public office, but was elected to Lexington, Massachusetts’ legislative body twice. Stein’s political positions are very liberal. She is currently receiving 2.1% in national polls (USA Today).
