A Military Forum with the Presidential Candidates

On September 7, presidential candidates Donald Trump (R) and Hillary Clinton (D) participated in a forum on military policy in New York City. Both candidates were allotted a time of thirty minutes for moderator Matt Lauer and members of the audience to ask questions on various security and military-related issues.

Lauer opened the forum by asking what the most important characteristic for a president to possess is. Both candidates had similar responses.

“Steadiness. I’ve had the unique experience of watching and working with several presidents,” said Clinton.

She continued on to say that temperament and judgement are key. Trump responded that he has good judgment and experience in dealing with foreign affairs.

Each candidate’s personal issues were also addressed. When Clinton was asked about the e-mail scandal, she asserted that she handled everything correctly. She said she takes classified communications very seriously.

During Trump’s interview, Lauer questioned him on whether his temperament is appropriate for the position as commander-in-chief, asking him in particular if he regrets anything he’s said.

“I beat sixteen people and here I am. So, you know, to a certain extent there is a regret. I would have liked to have done it in a nicer manner. But I had sixteen very talented people that I had to go through,” said Trump.

Trump continued by highlighting that there is a difference between the way he handles himself when he is trying to beat other candidates in a campaign, and when he is taking presidential action.

A major question on everyone’s mind is the candidates’ views on the Iraq war. Both Trump and Clinton said they do not support the war. The pair also agreed that the Department of Veteran Affairs needs major improvements. Maybe Trump and Clinton agree on more than meets the eye.

You’ll have a chance to hear more from the candidates during the first presidential debate on Monday, September 26. The second presidential debate will take place on October 9, right here in St. Louis at Washington University. Be sure to stay up-to-date with the campaign before the election in November.
