Prom is just around the corner, and the search for the perfect dress has been an on-going process for many girls for the past couple of weeks. Finding “the” dress is a pivotal moment in the prom process.

For the juniors, choosing a prom dress is a new experience. Camille Walsh was super excited to find her very own, unique dress.

“I was so excited to look for my prom dress. It was a great experience that I got to have with my mom. I wasn’t sure what kind of dress I wanted at first, but once I started to look around I got feel for what I liked and what I didn’t,” said Walsh.

Most seniors, however, are veterans when it comes to prom dress shopping. Carolyn Vossenkemper was ahead of the game this year and bought her dress at the end of January.

“I was so excited to go shopping. I love dressing up and just clothes in general. I got my dress so early because I couldn’t wait any longer! Last year I got a purple dress and this year, the bottom half is grey with a slight hue of purple, I guess I really like purple,” said Vossenkemper.

This year Carolyn Vossenkemper plans on wearing TOMS with her dress instead of the traditional heel, wedge or sandal. "I love them and they match perfectly," said Vossenkemper.

When it comes to prom fashion, there are no specific rules; it is all about expressing your personality while being comfortable. However, I do have some helpful tips for the night of prom that will make the evening more enjoyable.

  1. When it comes to shoes, I HIGHLY recommend NOT going with a stiletto heel — you will regret it later. Pictures are taken on a golf course so for every step you take, you will be sinking into the ground. I recommend a pair of comfortable wedges, sandals or flats. However, if you do insist on a heel, choose one that is a bit wider.
  2. Choose a hairstyle that will last all night. On the night of prom, your hair has to endure the current weather conditions of outdoor pictures as well as lot of dancing… so whether you have to load up on the hairspray or stash a bunch of bobby pins in your purse, make sure you come prepared.
  3. As for makeup, make sure your foundation and concealer do not contain SPF. Although SPF is good for your skin, it is horrible when it comes to flash photography. It washes you out and leaves a ghostly shadow on your face. I always opt for products that say “HD” which means they are high definition and great for pictures.

Prom is the one night of the year that everyone puts in their best effort to dress up and show off who they really are. “A Night Under the Lights” is so close and I can’t wait to see everyone’s dresses. The dance is sure to be one the juniors and seniors will not forget.
