April Showers Bring More Movies

April Showers Bring More Movies

Now that the Oscar season has passed, the movies up for next year’s awards shows are ready to take their shot. The question is, who is going to step up to the task?

April, usually a strong month for films, is lacking variety in 2016, primarily featuring small independent films and possibly expensive box office duds. Absent from the current April season are Best Picture contenders, family animated flicks and fantasy favorites. However, no matter the predicted talent, there is always room for potential, and April is no different. Here are some of the projected favorites:

Hardcore Henry

Released: April 8

An action film with a twist? Hardcore Henry is a first person action film from director Ilya Naishuller, where the camera is from the perspective of the protagonist, Henry, a recently resurrected man who must save his wife from robotic soldiers. Although the film fuses innovative cinematography and a fresh concept, the film received serious backlash from critics with headaches and nausea from the fast pace and intense filmmaking.

Demolitionimage

Released: April 8

The headline drama of April features Jake Gyllenhaal, an actor respected by both critics and fans alike, playing a character who lost his wife in a car accident. Demolition had serious potential, but was bogged down by early negative reviews and slow pace.

The Jungle Bookimage

Release: April 15

April’s family pick is a revival of the classic children’s book and a remake of the Disney film. The Jungle Book follows Mowgli, a young boy raised in the jungle with a handful of special animals. However, the 2016 adaption is done in live action rather than animation, a refreshing twist that will absolutely pay off aesthetically, economically and critically.

Release: April 15

April’s thriller features Emma Watson, the famed actress who played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series. This film highlights a young woman determined to rescue her boyfriend from an oppressive cult. Based off the early reviews and excitement, Colonia will be a thriller to remember.

The Huntsman: Winter’s Warimage

Release: April 22

Last, and arguably least, The Huntsman: Winter’s War is a definite dud. The film, a sequel to the poorly reviewed Snow White & The Huntsman, follows Eric the Hunstman in his quest to defeat the evil queens. Although this April flick features a solid cast of Chris Hemsworth, Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, the early negative reviews and nonexistent ad campaign created its immediate demise.

The potential for April cinema is spotty. With a wide range of critic reviews and mixed reactions from moviegoers, who’s going to stake the claim for glory in April? It’s time to find out.
