The Million Dollar Advertisement
Every Super Bowl, one million+ Americans tune in to the biggest sporting event of the year. No matter who is watching, there is always something to offer, ranging from the fast-paced football action to highly anticipated commercials.
The Super Bowl commercials always play an important role in defining the success of the event. However, the expectations for the Super Bowl 50 commercials may have been set too high. Although a small handful of the commercials succeeded, the majority fell flat due to a lack of humor and pure strangeness. Here are some commercials that were a hit:
- Snicker’s – Marilyn Monroe: A reinvention of the classic “You’re not you when you’re hungry” sketch with Willem Dafoe playing the unwilling lead character; hilarious and culturally relevant.
-
Hyundai – Kevin Hart: Kevin Hart continued his run of comedic success with his poignant and funny tale of a daughter’s first date.
- SquareSpace – Key & Peele: The funniest duo in comedy succeed with original and kooky characters in this early commercial for a website startup.
- Heinz 57 Ketchup – Weiner Dogs: A combination of hilarity and ridiculously cute dachshund puppies is the formula for a commercial that can be played over and over again.
- Budweiser – Helen Mirren: Unequivocally the best serious ad for Super Bowl 50. The commercial takes a strong stance on the horror of drinking and driving with the help of the strong and talented actress Helen Mirren. Although Budweiser’s typical formula of puppies and Clydesdales was missed, the commercial was still an instant success.
Other strong additions included Toyota and Amazon Echo. Some of the many advertisements that fell flat included, but are not limited to, Mountain Dew’s puppy-monkey-baby farce, Taco Bell’s unfunny chalupa quesadilla announcement, Dorito’s strange baby and Mexican Avocados.
It’s safe to say that Super Bowl 50 was a success. Peyton Manning brought home the Lombardi Trophy for his last rodeo, Coldplay, BeyoncĂ© and Bruno Mars stole the show in an electric halftime performance and the ratings peaked at an all-time high. However, even with a batch of solid advertisements, the commercials as a whole did not live up to expectations.

The Steven Tyler Skittles commercial was pretty funny too! The best one was definitely the Heinz Weiner Dogs though, so adorable!
