Dodging Low Self Esteem Through Intramurals

With the support of the student council, Ms. Fetter and Mr. Overberg were able to bring their idea of an intramural dodgeball league to St. Dominic High School. Open to all grades, this fun contact time activity is popular among all grades and has been a huge success for STUCO. So many teams are participating that during the first session on January 15, both the new and old gyms were utilized for play. There was also a tremendous turnout of spectators, filling the old gym and mezzanine with students cheering their friends on.

Offering intramural opportunities may have more benefits than simply providing a fun activity. Participating in sports is an important part of building and maintaining self esteem, as well as providing a sense of belonging and purpose which many teenagers are seeking. However, by the time they reach high school, many students quit playing sports due to various reasons, the most common being cut from their sport of choice or not being able to make the time commitment necessary. With the stresses of school, extracurriculars, family life and jobs, intramural sports are a constructive way to relieve stress and anxiety. Providing low commitment, intramural sports will allow students to participate who would not otherwise have had the opportunity, while also providing a fun break in the monotony of the week to spend time with friends.

“We’d like it to be fun for a different cross section of kids…males, females together. I think it’s mostly just for fun, to have a good time,” said coordinator Mr. Overberg.

From the Crusader Nation staff, we wish the teams good luck as they progress through the bracket. Make sure to check the bulletin for announcements of the next games, so that either as a spectator or player, you can join this positive community event. In the sometimes turbulent years of high school, participating in intramural sports right here at St. Dominic is a great way to boost self esteem and happiness in your everyday life.
