Hard Work Pays Off
After an incredible season of 15 wins and only one loss, sophomore Abby West qualified for the state competition for tennis in Springfield on Friday, October 16. West is a dedicated tennis player who has experienced an awesome journey this season!
West’s love for tennis began four years ago when her father taught her how to play. She constantly pushed herself to be a better player, which shaped her into the incredible athlete she is today. Over the summer she had private lessons in which she would practice five days a week. When the regular season began, West was practicing every day for two and a half hours. Throughout the season, she worked on becoming more consistent and improving her backhand shots. The biggest obstacle West faced this season was competing against very talented teams during sectionals. West’s favorite part of the season was bonding with her team.
“I have so much fun with my teammates between matches. They always stay to support me and cheer me on during my matches. Coach Morshed has also been a big help this year. He is constantly giving me strategies between matches and it has been really helpful,” said West.
This year was Coach Morshed’s first year coaching girls tennis. He previously coached boys tennis for two years in Santa Fe, New Mexico. However, players like West have made his transition a lot easier! He has very much enjoyed coaching the team this season, especially West.
“It’s been really easy to coach Abby. She is eager and listens well. She is able to overcome pressure really quickly. Tennis can get very nerve-racking with other coaches, players and the crowd, but she finds it easy to regroup and stay focused on what’s important,” said Coach Morshed.
The tennis team, along with the rest of the St. Dominic community, is so proud of West! She has a lot to look forward to in the seasons to come!
