Pope Francis Talks Family

To end his historic visit to the United States, Pope Francis held Mass at the World Meeting of Families on September 26. The importance of love and family was stressed to a crowd of nearly one million eager followers in his passionate and off-script homily.

Drifting from his prepared teaching, the Pope spoke words of encouragement and love in Spanish, pausing after every line to let an English translator convey his words to the crowd. While cracking jokes about children giving parents headaches, flying plates and the pain of mothers-in-law, Pope Francis explained the problems families face. The only way to overcome obstacles is with love, the Pope declared. Even though families aren’t perfect, they are still sources of light. He offered advice to families who fight from time to time.

“Never let the day end without making peace,” said Pope Francis.

Pope Francis also placed a special emphasis on children and grandparents.

“To look after grandparents, children, is the expression of love,” said Pope Francis.

Children and grandparents are the future, he went on to say. Grandparents have the memories of the family and children are the future, and together they help families move on from difficulties to a bright future.

Pope Francis ended his speech with a gust of passion and enthusiasm, triggering cheering and clapping from his loving crowd. Although Catholic pro-life supporters were eager to hear the Pope’s message about abortion and family planning, Pope Francis veered his attention to love, family and the future, leaving a lasting impression on American families.
