Winners In Our Hearts

The St. Dominic Crusader football team lost a homecoming heartbreaker to the talented Cardinal Ritter Lions Friday with a score of 26-20.

The Lions took an early first quarter lead, gaining touchdowns from players Naeem More and Jarred Phillips. However, the Crusaders were not diminished by the early touchdowns. In fact, they seemed even more alive in the second quarter after a quick break gave them time to regain their confidence. About halfway through the second quarter, junior RB Jake Larson rushed in from the red zone to score a crucial touchdown.

Halftime came along with an array of festivities. It began with a performance from the St. Dominic cheer squad, better known as the Fab 50, as well as the ladies’ dance team. Soon after, the 2015 homecoming court took the field, met with applause and cheers from the crowd. Finally, after a halftime speech from Coach Markway, the football boys were ready to take the field again.

imageThe third quarter was a battle between the two AAA conference rivals. St. Dominic struck first, with a 15-yard run from Larson. Junior Andrew Hoff missed the kick, making the score 14-13 in favor of Ritter. Four minutes later, Jared Price of the Lions answered with his 7th touchdown of the season.

With the game coming to a close in the fourth quarter, it was do or die for the Crusaders. Price scored again for Ritter early in the fourth, making the score 26-13. St. Dominic immediately turned once again to their offensive star, Larson. Ten seconds later, Larson took his third touchdown of the game to the house from 54 yards out, giving the Crusaders one last shred of hope. However, Larson’s heroics were not enough, as Cardinal Ritter finished with a 26-20 victory.

The Crusaders fought hard but just did not come up with the win against the Lions. However, the homecoming experience seemed to be awesome for all involved: players, fans, and parents alike. Next week, St. Dominic travels to Lutheran St. Charles. Due to the close proximity and passion from the fans, expect to see a packed Crusader crazy house even at the away game.
