Before We Went “Under The Big Top”

Students rushed to their local Walmarts, Goodwills and Dollar Trees to purchase questionable articles of clothing like bright orange vests, footie pajamas, mom jeans and tie-dye bandannas. The week before Homecoming was a time for St. Dominic students to show their school spirit, have some fun and let loose after enduring the start of a new school year. People refer to this week as “Spirit Week.” It included a different dress-down theme each day, a pep rally on Friday, along with a home football game and special surprises for the students.

Monday: Camo Day

Camo Day has been a tradition at St. Dominic ever since Spirit Week began. While some students wore a simple camo t-shirt or hat, others chose to wear bright orange vests and dress themselves in head-to-toe camo gear. Some students didn’t own any camouflage and preferred to dress in their school uniform; however, junior Patrick Sachs creatively taped a leaf to the front of his white t-shirt just before arriving to school.

“I’m pretty sure this counts,” said Sachs upon entering school.

Tuesday: Pajama Day

Mornings can be hectic for high school students. PJ Day gave St. Dominic students a chance to wake up at the last minute, not change into other clothes for the day and hop in the car to go to school. Students showed up in pajama pants, footie pajamas, robes and slippers. Pajama Day was the comfiest day on campus!

Wednesday: (Fashion Disaster Day) “What are Those”

This day allowed students to put their creativity to use. While some students simply dressed in their uniform, insisting that it is a “fashion disaster” in itself, other students dressed in their parents’ old business attire, colorful socks, interesting hats, the classic “groutfit” and much more.

“I like Fashion Disaster Day because it gives me a chance to wear my Crocs without being judged…and I have a Jibbitz on them,” said senior Grace Smith.

The students’ special surprise came in the form of shaved ice and a self-serve syrup station. Kona Ice came to campus during the four lunch hours, and students sipped their snow cones with smiles.

A popular hashtag on Instagram and Twitter, #tbt had its own place in Spirit Week. Students took a trip back in time to various decades. Outfits ranged from old-fashioned sports jerseys to ’80s getups. Some dressed in old school uniforms while others sported Girl Scout vests. Even scrunchies surrounded the school!

 Friday: Class Color Day

Students united as one class, with the freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors each wearing a specific color. Freshmen suited up in gray; sophomores rocked the color blue; juniors dressed in pink; and seniors decked out in tie-dye. At the pep rally, the St. Dominic student body was more colorful than ever, ready to take on the circus theme of the homecoming dance on Saturday night.
