As the clock ticks down on our seniors’ time at St. Dominic, the lack of motivation to do work, commonly referred to as “Senioritis”, has hit some seniors hard.
It can be hard to keep up with all the work and strain of high school life, especially when you know you will be out pretty soon. Seniors Jack Vogler and Jack Duncan respectively made it clear on their stance when it comes to their performance this semester.
“Senioritis is affecting me big time, I have no motivation to do work cause it doesn’t matter anyway, I’ll probably graduate, I feel like a war vet who’s tired of being in the line of active duty,” Vogler said.
“I think senioritis has affected me, and it’s a lot harder to find the motivation to do work,” Duncan said.
It is clear that this semester especially is where the decline is happening. Senior Keeley Skiljan believes that spring break might have made it more prevalent, and also stated that her own Senioritis set in when she knew she was already accepted into college. With a little under five full weeks of school, students need to hold on for just over a month more.
To combat Senioritis, the best course of action is to try and find time for work, set the time aside and compartmentalize the work given at the end of the day. If it is not done the night of, it will rarely be done the night before it is due. Being that it really all comes down to mindset, there really is no miracle cure besides just doubling down and working harder. Literature and Journalism Teacher Mr. Duncan commented that Senioritis cannot be combatted unless the person really wants to. However, he also added that it does put a strain on teaching.
“Well, kids really start to check out in the spring. They’re ready for the next chapter, to go off to college and start new. As a teacher it’s hard though when kids already have the risk of getting bored, once this time of year sets in, assignments come in more late, and keeping attention is much harder than normal,” Duncan said.
As the year approaches, students are ready to check out, but with a month left, it is time to batten down the hatches and prepare for one last push in the final month. Seniors may be ready to check out, and many already have, but before graduation day we still have that much more to push through.
