St. Dominic is gearing up for an exciting spring sports season, and anticipation is running high among students and fans alike. This year promises to be a thrilling one, with several teams ready to make significant strides and showcase their talents on the field, court, and track.
The baseball team is looking strong, with a mix of seasoned veterans and promising rookies. The team has been working hard in the off-season, focusing on improving their batting and fielding skills. Coach Arell is confident that their dedication will pay off, and fans can expect some exciting games ahead. The beginning of the season has faced a minor setback. The baseball field is currently under construction, causing the team to relocate to indoor facilities at the Ozzie Smith Sports Complex. Even though this inconvenience has been problematic, coaches and players remain optimistic.
“The team’s goals for this year center around player development, competing at a high level, and making a deep postseason run. With a strong core of returning players and emerging talent, the Crusaders are determined to build on past success and push their program forward,” Arell said.
On the soccer field, the girls’ team is determined to build on their impressive performance from last year. With a solid defense and a dynamic offense, they are aiming for a deep run in the state playoffs. The team has been training hard, and their optimism and teamwork are showcased in every practice session. This season, Coach Koeller hopes to improve most on being consistent at practices and on the field.
“We should never underestimate the power of imagination. There is something powerful in setting high goals for ourselves that is motivating to no end.Our goals are realistic, player-driven, and attainable. We anticipate players will use their imagination in creating goals to fuel the process of reaching our full potential as a team,” Koeller said.
Track and field athletes are also preparing for a competitive season. Sprinters, distance runners, and field event participants have been honing their skills and setting personal goals. The coaching staff is optimistic about the team’s prospects and is excited to see their hard work translate into success. Head track coach Blake Markway is especially pleased with this coming season as he has many returning players who previously have won state. Most notable, he says, is returning the school’s record holder in the 400m dash, Heidi Ziegler. While Heidi is only a junior, her talent and contribution to the program is impressive. She is an outstanding competitor who also excels in the 100m and 200m. In addition, Taylor Holdmeier set the school record last year in javelin, and Peter Cosmopoulos is looking to do the same in the boys throws this season.
“Track is very much seen as an individual sport but our program has done a good job of making it very competitive as a team to develop depth in all events and score points to compete for meet, conference and district championships as a goal beyond state qualifying as an individual,” Markway says.
As St. Dominic’s spring sports season kicks off, the school community is buzzing with excitement. With dedicated athletes, experienced coaches, and enthusiastic supporters, this season is sure to be memorable. Whether it’s on the diamond, the pitch, or the track, St. Dominic’s athletes are ready to give their all and make their school proud.
