Since the beginning of 2025, numerous airlines have experienced aviation accidents. Large commercial companies such as American Airlines and Delta have experienced backlash and hate due to the crashes, which leads to a bigger question: What was the cause of these accidents?
Many claim these accidents were due to lack of communication or perhaps freezing temperatures, but others fear that American flights lack proper safety measures.
The first, and perhaps worst crashes occurred on January 29th, 2025. Around 8:47 p.m. in Washington D.C., PSA Airline flight No.5342 collided midair with a Sikorsky helicopter. The collision instantly caused a flash, which was recalled by many individuals, especially as both the plane and helicopter landed in the Potomac River.
Unfortunately, due to the crash 67 individuals lost their lives, and no single person survived. This plane accident was the first major airline crash since 2009. After leaving Wichita earlier in the evening, the plane was headed toward Washington D.C. National airport. Rather than landing as planned, they were rerouted on a path along the river which caused the crash to occur.
On board flight 5342, there were nearly 30 members of the United States National Figure Skating team. Coaches, family members, and athletes lost their lives unexpectedly that night. Similarly, the helicopter was flown by 3 U.S. Military members, who also perished.
Even more recently, a different accident occurred with a Delta flight in Canada. On February 17, upon being cleared for landing, the Delta plane touched down on the runway, but suddenly overturned. This threw passengers, crew members, and individuals belongings completely upside down. After sliding for a good distance and creating a fire, the plane came to a stop enabling passengers to make a quick escape.
Although none of the 80 passengers were killed in this incident, over 18 individuals were injured. First responders fled onto the scene, urgent to help those needing treatment.
Many are still unsure what caused the plane to invert. Some blame the weather, admitting that the conditions were freezing, and much too windy to land. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is currently investigating the case, with the help of an NTSB team from the United States.
Recently, it is clear the plane industry has been struggling and is now facing consequences. Although the reason behind both crashes is still unclear, investigators are determined to find out.
Flying is the fastest way to travel, however many individuals are beginning to question whether or not the “risk” is worth it.
