Students at St. Dominic High School are buzzing with excitement as auditions for the spring musical, “Mary Poppins,” are just around the corner. This classic story, filled with exciting adventures and catchy songs, has everyone eagerly preparing for their moment in the spotlight.
The anticipation is seen in all the students in practicing lines, perfecting their British accents, and playing songs from the beloved soundtrack. For many, this is a dream come true, and a chance to be part of a production that has captured the hearts of audiences for generations.
Theater teacher Mrs. Hobbs, who will be directing the musical, shares in the students’ enthusiasm. As the preparation continues, she works with auditioners tirelessly to improve their skills in acting. Mrs. Hobbs is not the only person heavily involved in the show, Kathy Blattel has also played a big role in preparing her beloved students for their dancing audition.
“I’m not much of a dancer, but I’ve always wanted to learn the basics of tap. Plus, it’s always fun to watch the people who actually know how to dance show off their talent,” senior Cameron Schwent said.
Dancing plays a large part in this production. Many players are pushed out of their comfort zone by ditching the traditional musical theater dancing style, and learn the art of tap dancing. Tap is a very prominent part of Mary Poppins, because of this the general basics along with the more challenging moves are taught by Blattel to help many students.
From the talented Mary Poppins to the inspiring Bert, the competition is fierce, but the competition among the students is even stronger. As they support each other through the audition process, it’s clear that this production will be a magical experience for everyone involved.
