In an example of a sequel well done, Gladiator II has successfully revived interest in an old property and given a satisfying possible conclusion to the franchise.
Since its release on November 22nd, box office numbers for Gladiator II continue to rise, collecting $221 million and almost making back its $250 million budget in about 3 days. The film follows Lucius, son of the late Maximus Decimus Meridius, the previous film’s protagonist. When it becomes known to high ranking officials what his real identity is, it sparks utter chaos within politics and the coliseum.
16 years following the original story, the film does fantastic with its continuation of the story, use of some of the original Gladiator’s cast, and overall character arch with their new creations. As well as this, the film also pays homage to the one before it, with slight references and recreations of familiar moments. In addition to the more under the radar callbacks, Gladiator II gives reverence and respect to old characters and plot points, and incorporates them well to the overall story.
Audiences and critics seem “Entertained” overall, as Gladiator II received 84% audience rating, and 80% critic ratings on rotten tomatoes. These scores put it little ways above the original, and add to the idea that the sequel is worthy of carrying the originals legacy.
Certain audience members fail to see a reason for its creation. Citing the ending of the original Gladiator, and it’s beautiful end to the film, some believe a sequel to be unnecessary. While a fair point, there are holes in the argument. For starters, while the first film gave a satisfying end to Maximus’ character, the overall fate of Rome on the other hand required much more story for a clear conclusion.
Lucius’ character may not have been as substantial to the plot in the first film as the second, but his characterization of being the future of Rome was something that demanded further exploration. In addition to these, the new characters and chapters added to the stories of old characters were crafted beautifully. If quality means anything, Gladiator II and its plot are very necessary and properly execute a more definite sense of fulfillment for audiences.
With its original budget almost remade, and audience interest clearly present, Gladiator II has made it clear the franchise along with its legacy will “Echo in Eternity.”
