For many students, school is a place of independence and growth, away from the watchful eyes of their parents. However, for some kids, the school environment is combined with their home life because their parents work as staff members at their school. This unique situation brings a mix of benefits and challenges that shape the students’ academic and social experiences.
One of the biggest advantages of having a parent on the school staff is the sense of security it provides. Knowing that a parent is nearby can be comforting, especially for younger students who might experience anxiety about being away from home. This presence can be a supportive environment where kids feel safe and understood.
“It’s nice having my mom on campus, so she can do her duties as a mom and also a teacher,” senior Carter Zelnis said.
Additionally, parents who work at their child’s school often have a deeper understanding of the school’s culture, policies, and expectations. This insight can help them better support their child’s education. Parents can advocate for their children more effectively, ensuring they receive the resources they need to succeed.
However, this arrangement also presents unique social challenges. Children might feel self-conscious about their behavior, knowing their parents are nearby and potentially aware of their every move. This can lead to feelings of embarrassment or a desire to distance themselves from their parents during school hours.
“Sometimes I think, you know, maybe I shouldn’t do that because my dad works here,” senior Jack Duncan said.
There can be a delicate balance between the parent’s professional role and their parental role. Kids might struggle with seeing their parents as an authority figure at school, which can blur the lines between home and school life. It’s crucial for parents to establish boundaries and maintain professionalism to help their children navigate these dynamics. But all in all students and teachers alike find it a positive experience.
“I love being able to talk about my day and her knowing exactly who and what I am talking about. Overall I enjoy going to school and having mom work here as well,” senior Bridget Goins said.
While it can bring its own challenges, the parent teacher dynamic is a beneficial relationship for all involved, and can have a strong positive impact on the academic and familial lives of students.
