St. Dominic is filled with an amazing assortment of staff. As times have definitely evolved since the teachers were in high school, they often reminisce on their high school life back in the day.
One thing that St. Dominic puts a lot of effort into making the community feel more like a home rather than a school. St. Dominic’s main focus is making the community feel very strong and connected. There are many options in and out of school things, like clubs or even the house system, to help build a strong community.
“My school was definitely lacking the sense of community that St. Dominic has. I never was able to build lasting relationships with teachers and admin that I feel like the students get to do here,” literature teacher Ms. Robbins said.
High school is a time for teenagers to explore a better sense of freedom, responsibility, and most importantly to have fun. Being in high school is one of the best opportunities to make long lasting friendships, join a sports team or club, and also live out your teenage years.
“My favorite experience of high school was really just the time I spent with friends on the field, in the student section of basketball games, doing community projects as a part of S.T.A.R.T. Those friendships that were formed are still strong today over twenty years later with people,” varsity football coach and college counselor Mr. Markway said.
As all students know, high school is not just fun and games. High school can get very difficult, whether that is through school work, drama, or learning a new sense of responsibility. Even teachers had a difficult time with all of this in high school.
“One of the hardest things was not sweating the small stuff, but it is important to put yourself first sometimes. Focus on doing the best you can in all your classes, and making the most out of high school,” Ms. Robbins said.
The best thing about St. Dominic is the amount of opportunities that are provided to you if you are struggling with your school work. All the teachers are available at some time in the week during empower hour. There are also tutoring options before and after school everyday.
“St. Dominic provides so much academic help compared to my high school. I always worried about getting help from other teachers, but I feel like all the student’s here have so many opportunities to receive the help they need,” History teacher Mr. Hammerschmidt said.
St. Dominic has a great sense of community and faith. If you ever feel yourself needing advice or any help feel free to contact any of these teachers.
