Last night, St. Dominic honored the Burroughs family and their struggle to find a cure for Carson Burroughs Sanfilippo Syndrome. Cure for Carson night is a special night for the girls volleyball team as varsity player Addie Burroughs is Carson’s older sister.
This was St. Dominic’s sixth year hosting a volleyball game in Carson’s honor and it was nothing short of special. Many students and parents came to the game dressed in the awareness color purple. Sanfilippo Syndrome affected less than 5,000 kids in the US today and the disease attacks the brain and spinal cord.
“This game means so much to me and my family and I’m so glad to be surrounded by a community who is so supportive and loving,” junior Addie Burroughs said.
Cure for Carson made the volleyball game extra memorable, but so did the astonishing win against Lafayette. The girls battled it out in a hard five set match. To start out the night, we saw a clean first set win by our girls 25-21. Lafayette took over the second with a 13-25 ending score. St. Dominic struck back during the third set 25-21. Lafayette came back strong in the fourth set 15-25. Finally, the fifth set was an absolute battle till the end with a final score of 16-14 for St. Dominic leaves the night on top.
“The game was more than just volleyball, it was about Carson, and we gave all of our effort and energy to a bigger cause and that’s what ultimately led to our win,” senior Brytn Lyon said.
This win for the girls meant so much. Carson means alot to the volleyball program and getting to win for him was such an amazing moment for everyone. Thank you to everyone from St. Dominic and Lafayette that helped donate and contribute to helping the Burroughs family find a cure for their son.
Make sure to check out the volleyball teams next match on Monday, October 7th against the Eureka wildcats!
