Last Tuesday, the first and only 2024 Vice Presidential Debate took place in New York City and was broadcasted live by CBS News. Tim Walz, representing the Democratic party, battled it out against Republican representative JD Vance, in a highly anticipated 90 minute debate.
The debate covered many world conflicts including America’s economy, immigration, and conflicts in the Middle East. These are issues Americans continue to address each day, so hearing them broadcasted live caught the attention of many individuals. As always, both candidates were very prepared for the debate, and it showed in their performance.
To begin the debate, Governor Walz was questioned over whether or not he supports the country of Israel, especially when attacking Iran. Quick to answer, he replied that the country needs a strong leader, such as Kamala Harris to communicate with America’s allies. He further stated that it is vital to protect our forces, but also our allied troops. He believes that the country needs to remain calm in times of crisis, and that our nation’s tranquility will lead to the correct means of coalition.
Similarly, Senator Vance was asked the same question. His answer was fueled by the fact that the United States holds global leadership. That being said, he believes that Donald Trump recognizes that America finds peace through strength. Towards the end of his statement, he capitalized that while Israel will do whatever it takes to keep their country safe, America will support them in times of tribulation.
The following topic questioned candidates on the issue of immigration. This round, Senator Vance was questioned first, and was asked about his plan to carry out a mass deportation. His reply was delivered within an instant, as started by giving background information to support his knowledge. Vance believes that the problem of immigration has grown worse over the past 4 years. Because of this, illegal drugs such as fentanyl have entered into America and continue to endanger the country. His solution includes implementing Donald Trump’s previous border policies, along with deporting illegal criminals, as this would reverse the chaos of the past 4 years.
Walz was also questioned on the topic of immigration, and asked to respond to Vance’s statement. Immediately, he denied the problem of illegal drugs claiming that over the past year the nation has seen a huge decrease in the use of opioids. He further stated that a new bill has been created by a fellow conservative, one that he believes to be one of the toughest bills on immigration. His solution to the issue of immigration lies within this bill, as long as it is correctly passed and signed by Harris.
Near the end of the debate, the host addressed both Walz and Vance about their plans for the economy. Speaking first, Walz addressed how both he and Kamala have experience growing up in middle-class families. That being said, he believes the United States is facing a housing crisis, which includes millions of houses being built, yet Americans are struggling to pay for them. In order to solve this issue and better the economy, he asserts that Americans must become aware and educated on today’s economy, especially in terms of taxes.
Vance responded cleverly by saying Donald Trump doesn’t have an economic plan, but rather a record. He claimed that back in 2017 the nation experienced terrific economic growth thanks to Trump’s leadership. This record brought great success to the middle-class Americans as Trump’s policies led to an incredible take-home pay. Vance’s economic plan has already occurred, and is attainable again if Trump is elected as president.
The Vice Presidential debate provided important insight into issues concerning America from both a conservative and democratic view. The United States is a powerhouse, but also a leader, which both Walz and Vance proved to be true through their wisdom and knowledge. They properly set the stage for the month of November, when the 2024 Presidential election will take place.
