St. Dominic’s performing arts is once again in the spotlight after several members of the community made their debut, and more still making a return to District Choir.
The process of getting into the Saint Louis Metro District Choir is a long one. After selecting a song from one of several state-approved songbooks the contestants practice their individual solos, all the while also practicing several different other components to their auditions. Every individual must go through two separate auditions, one for their solos, and one for sight-reading key signatures and sheet music. Each portion has its own scoring system, and each individual’s score is put up against others in their own vocal group. For example, when competing as a tenor, your score will be compared to that of other tenors in both your singing and sight reading abilities.
Saint Dominic’s vocalists showed up in a big way, with sophomore Madelyn Hossfeld, juniors Autumn Capistrant and Madison Huff, and seniors Gabby Chiaradonna, Dorthy McMillen, Liam McMullin, Alex Edwards, TJ Blattel, and Ella Schmitz all being accepted.
The aforementioned Ella Schmitz is no stranger to being in a District audition, having competed several years in a row. Now, in her last year as a high schooler, Schmitz explained that while the general format has been the same for all of her three years she’s taken part, the questions asked and measures created for identifying key signatures and sight reading are changed every year. Schmitz also explained where our Crusaders will turn next now that they’ve been accepted.
“After all district auditions, those who got in will attend 3 rehearsals, the last of which will be an all day rehearsal only hours before the concert. The rehearsal process is really fast-paced and keeps the choir members on their feet and excited to perform their newly learned songs. The All District Concert is held at UMSL performing arts center and is free for anyone who would like to attend.” Schmitz said.
Even still, the proverbial grind continues for some Crusaders who have been labeled as eligible for all-state choir. The students named, those being Ella Schmitz, Madison Huff, Autumn Capistrant, Alex Edwards, TJ Blattel and Gabby Chiaradonna, will undergo a further audition. Those accepted will have the honor of performing with other students all throughout the state, and as an additional bonus, have a couple days off of school while performing.
Even as October begins and temperatures continue to cool, it seems things are only heating up for our Top Crusader Vocalists with concerts, and in some cases more auditions to come. We can’t wait to see where this showing of talent continues to take St. Dominic’s brightest vocalists.
