The most anticipated part of the year is quickly approaching. Everyone is anxiously awaiting for the first Friday night lights. The St. Dominic students always go all out in the student section and this year will not be the exception.
Last year, St. Dominic had an undefeated season until districts. That loss was difficult but it was nothing compared to the thrill that built up to it. Hopefully the football season this year will be as successful of a season, if not more so. Despite the loss at districts, the home games are still so exciting, with incredible plays and performances from last year’s varsity team. There are certainly some big shoes to fill but greatness can be expected in the upcoming season.
“With 125 players on the team, most of the kids made a commitment, overwhelmingly, to be there during the summer and get better. We’ll be ready for week one, both mentally and physically.” Football coach Blake Markway said.
One of the best ways to show appreciation for the St. Dominic community is by showing school spirit at the football games. This year our student spirit leader is Krischan Schulz. “I’m excited to be able to lead the student section this year. I want it to be the most hype and energetic year we’ve ever had.” Schulz said.
In addition to the spirit leader, a set mascot has been decided but is remaining a secret. Surely, there will be plenty of speculation of the identity of the crusader. Still, having a mascot at every game will definitely raise the crowd’s spirits, even though they are already so high. “I’m obviously going, it’s the first game. I hope the theme is good, but I’m gonna look really cute no matter what.” Senior Natalie Whede said.
The theme of the game has not been decided yet but should be announced soon. With only five home games this year the themes must be exceptional. In only two days, St. Dominic will battle it out with St.Charles West High school.
“I’m not at all worried. The fact that their defense is so similar to ours, that’s what we’ve been practicing for all summer. So I’m very confident” Senior football player Jack Cherniawski said. St. Dominic has always stayed true to their many pregame traditions. Students in the stands are responsible for planning things like the theme, any special effects for the crowd to use, as well as chants. In past years, the theme for the first Friday football game has been “USA”. The student section never fails to bring on the spirit and execute the themes perfectly. Other than our football team and student section, the varsity cheer team also spends their summer days preparing for the first game of the season. Before the cheerleaders take on the sideline, they also have traditions in order to prepare for the big game.
“Before every game, we always have a team dinner, and then we get ready together and do our hair and make up together, and then we go take cute little pictures.” Senior Cheerleader, Alison Palmer said.
No matter the outcome of this season, the students of St. Dominic love to show their support for their school. The St. Dominic community is overflowing with school spirit and confidence. Great things are sure to come this season.
