Quiz Bowl wrapped up on Monday with a stellar match up for the finals. With all the houses being so close in points, everyone was pushing to win this competition for their house.
The final two families were the Riechers/Miller/Schmidt family from Virtus and the Honerkamp/Trindle family from Temperentia. Being in a steady lead with three points difference from the beginning, everyone was expecting Virtus to take home the win, but in the second half of the game Temperentia really turned it around.
Virtus, by question eight of the 20, had a 5 to 1 lead. By the 14th question Temperentia had closed the gap, having a six to five with Virtus still in the lead. By the last two questions, Temp got a question correct to tie the game.
The last question was: “What after Christmas and Thanksgiving, what is the top food consumption day of the year?” Temp’s very own Michal Belarde answered with “the Super Bowl,” winning the Quiz Bowl for his house.
“Everyone that I’ve talked to had us either going really far or winning on their brackets so there was a lot of pressure, but everyone was also hyping us up because they knew we could do it, the support from everyone has been great,” senior Ella Kutz said.
Virtus, although sad about the loss, is already getting ready for next year with some strategic plans to hopefully take home the quiz bowl win next year. With most of their team returning, they will be a tough competitor next year.
“Our family captain did a great job of finding trivia questions to ask them everyday. We also watched all the live streams to scout the other teams and see their strategies so we could come up with a plan to play against that team,” head mentor of Virtus Mrs. Riechers said.
Being in last place for total house points this was a really great opportunity for Temperentia to switch up the scoreboard. Virtus has been close behind Gratia with a four point difference between second place and third. It is very possible there is a new second place holder since they were the runners up for quiz bowl.
However, the final two were not the only teams to earn some house points. The teams in the elite eight will also bring points for their houses and had a chance for even more points if they made it to the final four. The points for finishing in those positions should update on the scoreboard sometime this week.
No matter what the standings look like at the end of this week, next week Penny Wars starts. This will rack in big points for whoever takes the win in this competition. Regardless of the winner of quiz bowl, Penny Wars, and even the House cup, we will always be six houses, one home.
