Talking Tennis

It is out with the old and in with the new for the girls tennis team. After winning districts in the 2014 season, the team said goodbye to Coach Palazzolo. However, things turned back around for the girls with the construction of brand new home tennis courts and a new coach, Kevan Morshed.

Coach Morshed is the new French teacher for St. Dominic, but he is definitely not new to the sport of tennis. In past years he coached boys tennis at Desert Academy in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Both JV and Varsity are off to a great start this season. Varsity has a 5-2 record and JV has a 4-0 record, thanks to the hard work and dedication of each player and their coach. The top ranked player on the team is sophomore Abbi West and the second ranked player is her partner, junior Emily Cornett. This is Cornett’s first year playing tennis, but you couldn’t tell by the way she plays. Cornett and West are a great duo, working together to crush their opponents.

Although Coach Morshed coached boys in the past, he is very impressed with this year’s girls team.

“This girls team is very good; they are a strong team,” said Coach Morshed.

With the season underway, the team has been working hard preparing for districts in each match and practice. Coach Morshed is helping the girls pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses in order to improve on the court.

“It would be nice to win districts again and hopefully get some of our individuals to move on to sectionals and do well in sectionals,” said Coach Morshed.

We wish the Lady Crusaders good luck on the end of their tennis season, especially to seniors Liz Langdon, Mollie Hennessy, Kristen Callahan, Natalie Roden, Sam Schultz and Katelynn Wilson.
