Have you ever had a bad day at work or school, but then come home to see a cute face and a wagging tail, that makes your day instantly get better? At St. Dominic, our own community goes home to their fluffy friends after school hours, but not everyone gets to share in the love. Just last week, the students had the opportunity to snuggle with Miss Carolina, our very own Gala dog, around the halls of St Dominic.
Chewie, Jyn, and Kylo
Chewie, Jyn, and Kylo are the beloved pets of the Bannan family. Chewie, a 21 year old Shih-tzu, was rescued at the age of nine. Despite being blind and deaf, he’s still incredibly playful. The family’s second dog, Jyn, is a four year old border collie, who was rescued from a farm. The family’s youngest dog, Kylo, was rescued at 16 weeks after being thrown out of a car window. At two years old, the hound-lab mix is thriving.
“We adopted Kylo after one of our older dogs, Solo, passed away. Jyn and Chewie were sad, so we started looking for another dog,” Anya Bannan said.
Hank, Daisy, and Gidget
Hank, Daisy, and Gidget, are all beagles owned by junior Carson Schneider. While Gidget has been in Carson’s life before since she can remember, the Schneider family adopted Hank because Carson’s mother connected with him. Later, Daisy was rescued from an elderly couple who couldn’t keep up with her.
Brodie Lee
Brodie is a boxer/great pyrenees mix, and is the pup son of Literature teacher, Ms. Robbins. Robbins had been wanting to adopt a pup for a long time, and she knew what kind she wanted. With COVID, however, it was difficult to find something that stuck. One day she stumbled upon a picture of a black, male, puppy only weighing six pounds, that had been abandoned on the side of the road with the rest of his litter. She instantly fell in love, adopted, and the rest is history!
“He would choose to play with a glove or tape over a toy any day of the week. He is three and his full name is Brodie Lee. He was named after a professional wrestler,” Ms. Robbins said.
Violet
Violet is a dachshund owned by St. Dominic’s own Mrs. Hayes. Violet was adopted from a rescue in southeast Missouri, as a gift for her daughter after their last dog passed at 15.
Gus and Willow
Art teacher Ms. Taylor Linville, is the proud owner of two dogs: yellow lab Willow and Coonhound-Terrier Gus. Willow was adopted when Ms. Linville was a junior in college, and Gus was adopted last spring.
Envy
One of St. Dominic’s newest family members, Miss Darby Duncan, just adopted a new family member of her own! Miss Duncan recently adopted Envy, and Akita who weighs 106 pounds.
“We had spent time with her previously, and knew when her owner had to get rid of her, we had to have her,” Miss Duncan said.
Hershey
Hershey is Hunter Trigg’s seven year old chocolate lab, named after Hershey chocolate. Hershey was a birthday gift and seven years later, he continues to be a gift everyday.
Charlie
Charlie is a dachshund owned by Ally and Lauren Black. The Blacks were attracted to Charlie because of his strong personality. Charlie lives every day on a strict schedule he set himself, which he expects his family to adhere to.
Following our very eventful and successful Crusader Gala, the St. Dominic community stressed the importance of companionship with the adoption of Carolina, the dog for sale during that evening. The auctioning of a pup has been a part of the Gala for sometime now, and is always a big hit. Miss Carolina was auctioned for around $6,500, and was brought to its new forever home by the Kraner family.
It’s clear from what we’ve seen from St. Dominic’s community, whether that be faculty and staff or the students, life just would not be the same without a little fluff ball to come home to. Pets of any kind offer a strong sense of companionship and a certain type of love that other individuals just can’t provide. Whether you’re a dog, cat, or even a fish person, go home and tell your pet you love them!
