In sports, there are many things that happen that people don’t forget about. A significant event in hockey is Miracle on Ice, which in 1980, USA’s hockey team beat the Soviet Union. This was a huge moment for the team, and all its members.
On February 22nd, 1980 in Lake Placid, New York, the USA Olympic hockey team dominated, and proudly secured a gold medal. This game was one of the most entertaining games in hockey history. The United States team was full of amateur players, who were not predicted to win. The Soviets were full of professional athletes and highly anticipated to win.
USA was led by the remarkable Herb Brooks, who is still highly praised to this day. Brooks represented the team well, and was harsh on the boys, which paid off in the end. The former NCAA Minnesota coach was not an easy going coach. To prepare for the Olympics, the boys would do sprints on the ice for an extended amount of time. One of his tactics was to anger the players to have them gain motivation to prove him wrong.
After losing to teams during the tournament and losing hope, the boys gained encouragement from Herb’s famous speech. With players like Jim Craig, who left it all on the ice, and leader Mike Eruzione, who never let the boys quit, the victory was well deserved.
“If we played ’em ten times, They might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight,” Herb said in his speech.
Every year since this iconic game, it is remembered and celebrated by hockey fans from all over. This game was turned into a movie called Miracle, and is still streamed to this day. The movie is well made to represent the treatment that the players received as well as the effort to win it all.
This year marks the 44th year anniversary of “Miracle on Ice” and was remembered through pictures of the championship and stories from the players. The legacy of this team will continue to live on and forever be remembered as a true miracle and well representation of the United States Of America.
