On February 3rd, the annual Waste Management sponsored golf tournament took place in Phoenix, Arizona. This memorable golf event was founded in 1932, and is the fifth oldest tournament on the PGA tour. This popular event is known for its competition and entertainment.
This year’s winner, Nick Taylor, won with three birdies in a row on the final three holes. Despite the chaotic atmosphere, he pushed through and dominated the match.
With expected excitement on the 16th hole, as it is the best hole for fans in golf, there was a large amount of inappropriate behavior this year. Fans were exceeding the cheering expectations and unattended as they heckled the players.
This year was different from the rest, as fans were out of control due to exceeded alcohol intake. This issue quickly gained attention on social media and was not a good look for the Phoenix open. This atmosphere made it difficult for the players to concentrate and focus on their game.
Since recent attention has been received on this topic, the PGA has declared to promise to do better. With statements provided by sponsors, true golf fans hope to see actual change after the unbelievable events.
Players such as Zach Johnson and Billy Horschel, both made comments to fans telling them to stay away. Fans were out of control, and even were shown to be fighting with each other and chanting unnecessary things.
At a certain point of the match, alcohol sales were cut off because of an increase of produced goods. Many ticket holders were not let in the correct area of viewing because of fake tickets, and lack of security. This led to chaos and was the root of most problems.
Although the Waste Management Open was a success, there were many challenges that could have been avoided. People from all over are eager to see what actions Chance Cozby, the executive director of philanthropic events will take to stop this problem, and bring back a calmer approach to watching golf.
