As the fall sports come to a close, the winter sports are gearing up for their upcoming seasons! One team to look out for is the Boys Varsity Basketball team. The boys have senior leaders to look out for this season. Head Coach Kevin Roberts, has some big goals set for this superb team.
Roberts had a successful year in the 2022-2023 season. Ending the year with a 17-11 record, to only come short in the District Semifinals. Roberts has been the head coach for the Varsity team for eight years. He plans to lead this team to an even better season, and guide them to victory.
“As a coach, we must have the same process as the players. My goal is how can I make this team better everyday,” Roberts said.
Senior Raymond Butler, has been a key role to this team, and will be the one to look up to this year. He had been on varsity for all four years of his high school career. This has given him experience, and knowledge of the game that he can pass along to the future team. Butler has big aspirations in mind, and will put them to action.
“It is an honor to be on varsity all four years, It is also a big responsibility to maintain that level of play, and focus every year. For this to be the last year, it kinda feels like the Bulls documentary The Last Dance,” Butler said.
Roberts already has a game plan made for the team. He has non-negotiables set up for his athletes, and high expectations, for which they need to uphold. They need these in place to reach their team goal of doing better than any team before them. The team has so much untapped potential that can be reached.
“On the court our non-negotiable is our defense. Offensively we adjust to fit our personnel. Control what you can control, your attitude and effort. Everything else will fall into place,” Roberts said.
The team has filled up their roster this year, as they plan ahead for big games. The major opponents this year include Hickman. Along with St. Dominic’s Christmas tournament, which has been an annual tradition here at Dominic, for the past twenty nine years. Hopefully the boys can reach for another first place finish, for the thirty year mark.
Some more exciting leaders the boys have this year, include a senior Brayden Gardner. He recently committed to Loras College in Iowa. Big hopes this season as the team is geared up with many experienced seniors, nine in total!
The boys are getting ready for their home opener on Tuesday November fourteenth, at five o’clock against Parkway Central. They need all the support they can get. So make sure to come out, and cheer on these stellar athletes!
