As college fall sports begin, there are conference realignments and considerations that have turned heads. Such as, the Big 12, Big 10, and PAC 12. The faces of these conferences are forever changed. Along with the PAC 12 almost extinct with only having four colleges left to support the conference.
To begin, the Big 12 has gained eight new schools to their already prestigious ten. The Big 12 has grown gradually throughout the years but in recent years they have grown exponentially. Coming into this 2023 fall season with BYU, Cincinnati, UCF, and Houston. Then, in 2024 Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado Boulder, and Utah will be joining the family. However, Texas and Oklahoma will be moving to the SEC in 2024. Despite this, the Big 12 will still have a whopping number of sixteen schools.
The Big 10 also has realignment controversy. Starting in the year of 2024 UCLA, USC, Oregon, and Washington will be joining. All of which are from the PAC 12. Making the Big 10 the largest conference in the Power 5 with eighteen schools. The Big 10 is known for their superior athletics in all sports and these additions add clout to the conference.
The PAC 12 definitely has been affected the most in the shiftings of conferences. They have slowly been deteriorating throughout the last two years. Losing four schools to the Big 10 and and four to the Big 12 in 2024. Making a total of eight leaving and only four to represent the PAC. The PAC 12 attrition places them as the lowest count of schools in the Power 5. Having only Stanford, Washington State, UC Berkeley, and Oregon State on the roster. The PAC 12 is still yet to announce any sort of next steps as to what the future holds for this collapsing conference.
