As the St. Dominic football season comes to a start, there are new leaders, goals, and coaches on this returning state finalist team. The captains on the varsity squad have goals in mind and are anxious to get started.
There are six senior captains on this year’s varsity roster, they are looking forward to playing one last season together. Some of these boys go all the way back to playing on the Junior Crusader football team, and are now beginning their closing chapter, especially the new leadership seniors.
“I plan to lead this team by example. When I mess up I don’t put my head down. I keep playing so that the younger kids can look up to me and be a role model for their game as well,” Senior Varsity Captain Conner Beerman said.
The boys feel a little pressure, coming off a state run and losing a tough game against St. Mary’s. Luckily they look to head Coach Markway for guidance, goals, and inspiration for this upcoming season.
“Every season we try to be better than the previous year, there was some pressure from last year since we did make it to state, but like Coach Markway always says, every year is a new year and a new team,” Beerman said.
One of the newest members of the coaching staff is Coach Twan Golliday. Antwyne, his father, had many achievements in his early years, he was elected to the IHSA Hall of fame and St. Louis Metropolitan Hall of Fame. His fathers guidance helped Coach Twan to make a name for himself. From being the Head Coach of the Missouri Cyclones Minor League football team, to only losing six total games, making three league national championships and winning two out of the three. These accomplishments were made within the span of four years.
“What I’m looking forward to this season is to have fun watching these young men grow both on and off the field. I believe the game of football teaches many life lessons. I truly enjoy my time at practice with these guys,” Golliday said.
As the school looks forward to this year’s new team, leaders, and goals. The excitement is starting to creep in with the upcoming game this Friday at St. Charles West at 7pm. Make sure to come out and watch the boys game opener!
