Football and Fútbol for the Lou’
Even though we are in the time of the year between the Super Bowl and March Madness, the sports world can feel a little bit slow and boring. Not for the city of St. Louis though, because of the return of the XFL team, the St. Louis Battlehawks, and the debut of our MLS team STL City SC. With these two exciting teams playing for our city, it couldn’t be a more exciting time for a St. Louis sports fan.
Despite the St. Louis Blues troubling season, it is still a great time to be a St. Louis native. A couple weeks ago, the Battlehawks made their return as did the XFL after a three year hiatus after its initial revamp back in 2020. Since their start, the Battlehawks have found themselves with a good looking 2-0 record. Early in the season? Sure it is, but every victory in the win column feels good for a city that misses its NFL team.
The Battlehawks won’t make their home debut until March 12th when they take on the Arlington Renegades inside the Dome at America’s Center. Before then, they will play their third game of the season this upcoming Sunday in an away game against the D.C. Defenders. Luckily for viewers, almost all of the XFL games are broadcasted on mainstream channels such as ESPN, ESPN 2, or FX. Therefore, with how easy it is to watch, make sure you tune in to cheer on the Battlehawks as they remind everyone why St. Louis was a good football city.
The second, and equally as exciting team for St. Louis is the debut of the Major League Soccer team, STL City SC. The MLS has done a fantastic job with their expansion teams, and what better place to go than the heart of soccer in America, St. Louis. Despite many existing beliefs that this team’s debut is long overdue, it’s still amazing to see that our city finally has a professional soccer team to represent our love for the sport. The club, which was founded in 2019 after the MLS approval, is something that many in the area fought for so long to get. Time after time St. Louis’ bid was rejected by the MLS, but in 2019 it all came together, and now all of us are gifted with this team.
Usually expansion teams don’t do very well in the first few seasons, but who’s to say that STL City SC can’t be one of them. After all, they did win their first game of the season this past weekend in a thriller 3-2 win over Austin FC. Looking ahead to the grand show, the home opener, will take place on Saturday, March 4th at CITYPARK against Charlotte FC. There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that this game is going to be a sellout. Fans in St. Louis have been waiting many years for this moment, and it is expected that Saturday night will be a wild one downtown.
So throughout the spring and summer, make sure you try to go to a game of either teams, or make sure you cheer them on as this is an exciting time for our city. Whether you are a football fan or a fútbol fan, all sports fans can appreciate the time we are in, so check the TV listings and the team schedules to find out when these two amazing teams will be in action.
