Coaches Stand Up To Cancer

Coaches take a stand to cancer by holding a fundraiser

St. Dominic comes together for many fundraisers, which accentuates the community that our school brings. This winter our basketball teams are joining to fight against cancer. Tuesday, February 7th, St. Dominic faces Lutheran St. Charles, girls varsity at 5:30 and boys varsity at 7pm.

The Coaches vs Cancer game is a way for our community to come together and stand up against cancer. There’s always someone out there who has a loved one with cancer, but St. Dominic is always here to help in many different ways.

“An effort to show our support for cancer survivors, for those currently battling cancer, and all of those whose battle has already ended,” Administrative Assistant Sarah Summers said.

During the games, there will be a bake sale, wristbands to buy and donations are being collected during half time. St. Dominic also sold apparel for players, coaches and all athletic fans to wear during to show their support.

“One of the greatest things about this event is that St. Dominic students get to actively participate,” Mrs. Summers said.

By participating in this fundraiser, our school comes together in both prayer and community. This is important because it upholds two out of our four Dominican Pillars. Through prayer we strengthen our bond with each other and display our willingness to help anyone as Christians.

“It is a great opportunity to take an everyday sporting event and use it as a way to bring awareness. It is also a great way of showing support as a community to raise money to go back to cancer research,” Girls Basketball Head Coach Justin Wilmes said.

Games like these show how important it is to give back to our communities. With the money raised, it will help expand new programs, and minds. Coaches showing athletes a deeper look into this philanthropy can inspire them in the future to take action.

“Show your support by joining us on Tuesday to support St. Dominic and to take one step closer to defeating cancer,” Mrs. Summers said.
