NFL Playoff: A Thrilling Finish Awaits
Now that we are at the conclusion of the divisional round for the NFL playoffs, the remaining four teams are set, and the conference championships next weekend will be nothing short of entertaining. Perhaps this weekend was less exciting than the Wild Card weekend, but these games did a good job at showing us what to expect from every team moving forward.
Jacksonville Jaguars 20 – 27 Kansas City Chiefs
It wasn’t the cleanest of games from the Chiefs, but the biggest takeaway from this game is the health of their quarterback. Patrick Mahomes, after he dealt with some major ankle problems. In this game he was able to stick it out, but it was obvious that he was in some major pain. The Chiefs will have to play a much better game next weekend if they plan to advance to the Super Bowl. However, give credit where credit is due to the Jaguars. This team defied expectations, and coaches have so much to look forward to next season.
New York Giants 7 – 38 Philadelphia Eagles
With two rivaling fan bases, this game had the making of a good one, but it was evident right away that this was not going to be as good of a matchup as we all thought. The Eagles proved why they are the #1 seed in the NFC, and they were dominant across all aspects of the game. At halftime alone they were up by 28, and by that point, Giants fans knew that a comeback was not possible. The Eagles offense is very scary too with all five of their touchdowns coming from five different players. With how they have been looking, it would not be surprising at all to see them win the NFC title game next week and advance to the Super Bowl.
Cincinnati Bengals 27 – 10 Buffalo Bills
This game could be viewed in two different ways, on one hand, you could look at this game and think that the Bengals outperformed expectations. On the other hand, you could see this game as a total offensive meltdown from the Bills. In all honesty it was a combination of both because this game was not remotely close at all. The Bengals are a much bigger threat than I had perceived them to be, and they might just be the favorites to win the AFC title game considering how they played today. A great win for the Bengals, and once again the Bills have some serious work to do if they want to be winning these types of games.
Dallas Cowboys 12 – 19 San Francisco 49ers
If you had only watched the first three quarters of this game, then it would have been quite boring as only field goals were scored. In fact, there was only one touchdown scored in this game, which belonged to the 49ers. One thing that didn’t help the Cowboys much was the two interceptions that were thrown by their quarterback, Dak Prescott. It’s another playoff disappointment for the Cowboys, but in comparison to previous seasons they should be looking ahead to the next few years very optimistically. The 49ers however need to fix their offensive problems as well if they want to have any chance at beating the Eagles.
With days to go till the NFC and AFC title games, here are the previews for both games…
NFC Title Game, Sunday January 29 at 2:00 PM, Philadelphia Eagles vs San Francisco 49ers
If anything other than an Eagles blowout win would be quite surprising. Just going off how these teams looked this weekend, the Eagles have to be considered the heavy favorite for this game. It would certainly solidify the Eagles success this season if they were to win the NFC championship. Don’t entirely count out the 49ers though, they could cause a stir if they are playing lights out and the Eagles are having an off day. Anything can happen at this stage, so it wouldn’t be fair to discount them from winning, but the Eagles might just be too much of a challenge for San Francisco.
AFC Title Game, Sunday January 29 at 5:30 PM, Cincinnati Bengals vs Kansas City Chiefs
It might be controversial, but I would be quite surprised if the Chiefs are able to win this game. Between Patrick Mahomes’ health not being certain and how the Bengals looked this weekend, it would be very unlikely that Kansas City is able to come out on top. However, I would be lying if I said that the Chiefs aren’t able to win this game. They absolutely have the potential to win this game, but Cincinnati has just been looking so good lately. Particularly with losing the Super Bowl final last year, they just have this special hunger and fire to win this year. It’ll depend on the performance of their quarterback, Joe Burrow, to see if they’ll be up to the task, but they’ve done it before, especially last year beating the Chiefs in overtime in this exact same game. This rematch will probably be the more exciting of the two, but let’s hope that both teams are able to deliver.
With just a few weeks left until the biggest football game of the year, these games will be the determining factor for who is the favorite for the Super Bowl. Many questions will be answered, but perhaps the biggest one being who will come out on top on Sunday.
