Holiday Decorations: How Early Is Too Early
During this time of year there is one big debate that sticks out more than anything else; why are there already Christmas decorations up? The answer: Because people like me love to experience the Christmas season for more than just a month. Is it a little early to be thinking like that? Maybe, but that’s up to each individual person. For me, I like Christmas decorations to be out as soon as they can so that we can cherish them for longer.
Granted, stores can put out holiday decorations for any holiday very early, but really the only one people care about are the Christmas decorations. I understand the argument that putting out holiday decorations too early takes away the magic of Halloween and Thanksgiving. To be fair, the argument makes a fair point because I am a huge fan of those holidays too, and I wish to see more “decor” and spirit of those too.
However, Christmas overpowers them all, and Halloween and Thanksgiving fans just wish that they could be as popular as Christmas. I mean take a look at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, who exactly is the biggest attraction? Santa Clause float is, because even on Thanksgiving people are already beginning to think about Christmas.
I tried to find some other opinions on this issue and St. Dominic students seem to be pretty divided on it.
“I am against it because it’s too early and it skips the other holidays that are important like Halloween and Thanksgiving. They each have a month and it’s dumb to skip ahead,” junior Matalyn Tritz said.
“I personally think stores can put out the decorations as soon as they want to. I do admit, it’s a little annoying when they skip a holiday. Like right after Halloween stores put out Christmas decorations. Putting up decorations gives people the time to admire the spirit and the hard work they put in to make the holiday worthwhile,” junior Alyssa Baird said.
So, yes I think we can all agree that putting Christmas decorations out in the middle of September can be just a tad bit early. However, overall the stores are actually doing themselves a favor because Christmas fanatics will flock to their stores to start their shopping early, or spending more money early. I traveled to Universal Studios this past summer, and what was one of the stores I visited? That’s right, the Christmas store. They had tons of great selections and it made me feel in the holiday spirit in the middle of July. That is the power that Christmas holds in everyone.
If I had been in a Halloween or Thanksgiving themed store, then I couldn’t have said that I felt the same festive spirit. If I can feel the Christmas spirit in the middle of July, then I have no problem with Christmas decor being up in the beginning of October. That is the correct way to settle this debate.
