The 2022 Video Music Awards were filled with drama, announcements and celebrations as the stars took to the stage and the red carpet. Fans were treated to performances by Nicki Minaj and the Korean Pop group, Blackpink, as well as drama offstage.

The VMA’s had many viral moments, the biggest being Taylor Swift announcing her new album. Her new album, called Midnights, will come out in October and will be her tenth studio album to date. Many fans were eagerly awaiting an announcement from Taylor, but not many expected a new album release so soon after her album last year, Red (Taylor’s Version), did so well in the charts. 

Apart from Taylor Swift’s new album, the most controversial moment of the night was the appearance of rapper Yung Gravy and Sheri Easterling, mother of famous TikTok star Addison Rae, appearing to be going together sparking drama online. This comes after Easterling’s recent publicized divorce with Monty Lopez, who has been feuding with Yung Gravy over his recent comments about Easterling. The two appeared to be holding hands which grabbed the attention of many online. 

With all of the drama off the stage going on it can be easy to overlook the stellar performances by Nicki Minaj and Blackpink. Nicki Minaj performed a medley of all her best songs throughout her career, even performing her new single, Super Freaky Girl, to the delight of fans all around the world. It was also a big night for K-Pop as it was the first time that the famous girl group Blackpink performed at a U.S. awards show and many on social media are saying that they had the best performance of the night. 

But the biggest winner of the night? Female Directors. During one of her acceptance speeches, Taylor Swift brought to the attention of viewers that it was the first time that four female directors were nominated for Video of the Year. And that within itself is groundbreaking for women in an industry that is mostly male dominated.  

It was a successful night for female artists as they won many of the night’s biggest awards. Lizzo, a very popular pop singer won the category for Video for Good. During her speech she reminded everyone how talented she is after receiving lots of hate online about her talents and her looks.  

With not many awards shows left in 2022, the VMA’s proved to be filled with stars and many talked about moments. It was a great way to help near the end of the 2022 awards show season.
