Ladies Tennis Team Hopes for Success
The ladies tennis team at St. Dominic is a very successful and supportive program. Last year, the team went 6-7 and won the AAA Conference. This team thrives on hard work and practice from all players, no matter their rank.
“Last year the tennis team was a very close knit group, and was very successful. We won the conference title and we made it to districts until losing against Lafayette last season,” said Joey Berra, who is currently ranked 5th on varsity.
The team has many goals for this upcoming season. They hope to win districts and possibly state.
“This season we are looking to build upon what we started last year. I spoke to the team about repeating as Conference champions and winning Districts. It would be great to see some of our Seniors qualify for State in either singles or doubles,” said Coach Moore, who has been the team’s coach for two years now.
Anna Burcham has been a member of the tennis team since her freshman year. She has risen through the ranks as a JV player and is now ranked first. Her maturity and leadership abilities are undeniable as she inspires those around her to work hard and persevere.
“My biggest accomplishments are making varsity for three years and playing number one doubles for two. Being chosen as captain my senior year was a huge accomplishment. Also, one of my best accomplishments was beating state-ranked Parkway North in the Francis Howell Central Doubles Tournament junior year with my partner Emilie Meyer,” Burcham said.
This team is all about community. Most have known each other for all of their years at St. Dominic or play other sports together. The group of seniors is special because of their competitiveness and closeness. It sure will be fun watching them compete this season.
“The St. Dominic tennis team represents a strong sense of community because we always support each other when one of us isn’t playing the best, and we always cheer everyone on no matter what. This year there are also a lot of seniors (Joey Berra, Anna Burcham, Maren Hunt, Charlize Courtney, Marta Schrick) who are ready to lead and help the underclassmen with whatever they need,” said Berra.
The St. Dominic girls tennis team is a wonderful group who always know how to compete and have fun at the same time.
