Their Finest Hour
Last summer, the United States men’s national soccer team completed a three-week journey in Brazil, where they participated in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Back home, their entire nation was behind them. Bars, restaurants and living rooms across the country filled with hope that a miracle would occur on the pitch. “I believe that we will win!” was no longer just a saying; it was a mantra. People who had never even seen a soccer game before had eyes glued to their televisions. Not because they loved soccer, but because they adored their country. After a successful group stage, a strong Belgian squad knocked out the United States. Back at home, hearts were broken, dreams were shattered, and bars were empty. “Four more years!” people cried. Many of these makeshift soccer fans were not aware that their country was less than a year away from embarking on another historic journey. This time, they will just have to put their trust into some girl power.
This June, the United States women’s national soccer team will travel to Canada to compete in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. One of the strongest US squads to date will take on Australia, Nigeria and Sweden in the group round. Although the team is hoping for a #1 seed finish, two of the four teams are guaranteed to advance, and possibly a third team as well.
The roster is a perfect combination of veterans, star players, and the stars of tomorrow. Veterans like Abby Wambach and Christie Rampone hope to lift the trophy knowing this is their last chance. Modern stars such as Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe must bring their best game play to the tough bracket. Future stars like Christen Press and Julie Johnston are looking to contribute in any way possible. Although the United States women have won two world cups, the last title was in 1999. Another trophy on the shelf could not come at a better time for U.S. soccer.
In less than a month from now, bars will fill up once again. Living rooms will host a plethora of screaming fans, praying for goals in the dying seconds of the game. Business workers will take a few extra breaks to see if they can catch some of the action. The nation is one month away from another World Cup. Is this the year the United States women take the trophy back? I believe that we will win! I believe that we will win! I believe that we will win!
