Last weekend, our SDHS Crusader Players took us back this time to the 1800s in England. The fall play, Charley’s Aunt, was a classic romantic comedy with loveable characters like Jack Cheney, Kitty Verdun, Charley Wykeham and Amy Spettigue.

For those of you who don’t know, Charley’s Aunt was akin to Mrs. Doubtfire, but with a vintage twist. The set was simple, but its quaint beauty quite literally set the stage and allowed the actors to shine.

Senior Jacob Moore played Jack, while juniors Aaron Youngman and Bennett Hawkins shared the role of Jack’s best friend, Charley. This hilarious entourage would not have been completed without the witty Lord Fancort Babberly, played by junior Cody Peters. There is no doubt Peters stole the show with his confidence and charm as he took on the make-believe role of Charley’s “aunt.”

On opening night, Moore, Peters and Youngman improved an entire scene. Many people claimed the trio demonstrated a hilarious performance that kept them in stitches.

The boys were not the only ones who knew how to put on a great show. Senior Elise Newman excelled in the role of Kitty, Jack’s love interest.

“I really liked my role in the show because it allowed me to step outside my comfort zone and do something I’d never done before. It was the biggest role I ever had, and I am really grateful for this experience,” Newman said.

Another memorable takeaway from the show was senior Tori Larner and her performance of the good-natured Amy Spettigue.

“It was so sweet getting to do the show with my best friends by my side. It’s bittersweet, but I’m already excited for the next production!” Larner said.

Although the curtain closed for Charley’s Aunt, the performing arts are nowhere near finished. Auditions for the winter show, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, are this Tuesday and Wednesday, so be sure to wish our Crusader Players good luck!
