This past Friday, the St. Dominic football team had an incredible start to their season against St. Charles West. For the first time in school history, the Crusaders scored 63 points in a single game. The 42-point deficit launched the team to a decisive victory over the Warriors in just their first game.

Normally, the first football game of the season for most schools is an opportunity to see how their team performs in something more than a scrimmage and maybe pull off a close score line. This was not the case for the Crusaders, who destroyed the school record for most points scored in a single game on Friday.

However, the 63-21 win did not come easy. It was St. Charles West who scored first. That scoreline did not last long when junior Jackson Overton ran for his first touchdown three minutes later, tying the game at seven each.

The Crusaders were ignited after this, with Cam Whitt scoring two more TDs in a row off of a pass from quarterback Kelly Welby. And even after a run into the end zone for the Warriors, the scoring didn’t stop for St. Dominic, as Overton ran for two more touchdowns, bringing his totals to three touchdowns and 89 yards in the game.

After a third and final West touchdown, the Crusaders were still fired up. Matthew Willenbrink scored twice in the end zone along with Ryan Schwendemen and Sam Povich, finishing the night with 63 points in all and a total of nine touchdowns and over 500 yards of offense through the team.

This season, the Crusaders are coming to fight hard and they are not done yet. With this much success for the St. Dominic football team in just their first game, it gave a great gauge of how the rest of their season may go.

“We always tell our players the goal is to get 1% better every day so that you’re playing your best football come playoff time. This was a great start, but it can’t be the high point of the season. We need to focus on the winning details every day to play even better against Affton and keep that goal of constant improvement as our focus,” head football coach Blake Markway said.

What is even more surprising is the fact that this was the first career start for the Crusaders offensive line of Matt Reid, Danny Hahn, TJ Kwapiszeski, Nash Kell, Ethan Cornett and Will Maloney. This big of a result is all due to the countless hours the entire team spent this summer dedicated to learning plays and getting better.

“I thought the players had a great summer. They are a very very dedicated group with strong leadership, so I expected them to play well, but maybe not necessarily put that many points on the board,” Coach Markway said.

Hopefully the Crusaders will be able to dominate the scoreboard again this Friday at Affton High School. Be sure to cheer on the team for another victory!
