Movies can be popular for having a big budget, being so bad you can’t help but laugh or maybe just being a solid film. However, there are so many underrated films that don’t receive the recognition that they deserve!

Our trusty IMDB released a list of the most underrated movies of all time. These happen to include Darbareye Ella from 2009, Ace in the Hole from 1951 and Back to the Future Part II from 1989. This list just barely scratches the surface of the hundreds of amazing films that don’t get the attention they should.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire

In the 90s, Disney released a plethora of incredible movies, many of which were overlooked. Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a Disney animated film that no one seems to remember, but it has an enthralling storyline and fun characters. It tells the beautiful story of museum cartographer Milo Thatch and his crew as they go on an epic journey to find the lost city of Atlantis.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Hunchback of Notre Dame, based on the Victor Hugo novel of the same name, tells the story of hunchback Quasimodo who with the help of gypsy Esmeralda fights against his psychological captor and becomes accepted into society. This isn’t the typical animated film kids get into, but it’s 100% worth the watch.

The Emperor’s New Groove

Although it is not as obscure as some of the other underground Disney films, The Emperor’s New Groove doesn’t nearly get as enough recognition as it deserves. The story of a selfish emperor and his compassionate peasant is inarguably Disney’s funniest movie, and deserves a place among the classics.

The Road to El Dorado

It’s not Disney, but The Road to El Dorado is, in my opinion, one of the greatest animated films of the century. It’s about two Spaniards named Miguel and Tulio as they search for the lost city of gold, El Dorado. It’s funny, full of adventure, and has an amazing message.

The Others

Sure, The Sixth Sense was good, but the much more underrated Nicole Kidmann movie, The Others, was just as enthralling. It’s about the story of a mother and her two children who are deathly allergic to sunlight, and then one day, they realize their house is haunted. That’s about all I can say without giving away the storyline, but it has a plot twist that will leave you bewildered for days.

Hachi: A Dog’s Tale

When you’re in the need of a good cry, instead of turning on The Notebook for the tenth time, watch Hachi: A Dog’s Tale—the 2009 movie, adapted from the original 1987 Japanese film. I could barely watch this movie because of how sad it was! It tells the heart-wrenching story of a man and his dog Hachi, and the loyal bond they share.  

Willow

Maybe fantasy isn’t your cup of tea, but everyone enjoys a good adventure movie every once in a while. Willow from 1988, produced by George Lucas, tells the story of aspiring magician and “little person” Willow, who goes on a quest to protect a child who could save their world. It’s a wonderfully made fantasy film that keeps everyone interested.

There are so many incredible stories that don’t get enough attention, due to the fact they’re overshadowed by big box office movies. Whenever you want to watch something new, turn on one of these underrated masterpieces.
