For the first time in history the Super Bowl has been hosted in a home stadium—and won by the host. The Kansas City Chiefs (defending champs) were a three point favorite to win the championship, but there was a major upset when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers came out strong and heavy with an early lead.

For the first time since 2002, the Buccaneers brought home—well, kept at home—a Super Bowl championship. This was quarterback Tom Brady’s tenth Super Bowl, as well as his first with the Buccaneers helping him add ring number seven to his collection.

Brady is 43 years old, making him the oldest quarterback in the NFL. This was the first time any QB has completed 80% of their passes and had three touchdowns in the first half.

The Chiefs took the first three points with a 49-yard field goal, but only soon after and the first time in his career, Brady threw the first touchdown in a Super Bowl to Rob Gronkowski to put his team on top. 

To extend the lead for the second time in the game, there was a Brady and Gronkowski touchdown making the score 14-3.

The Chiefs are able to get another field goal with only a minute left in the half giving them three more points. However, the Bucs held the Chiefs through the first half and Brady threw his third touchdown to receiver Antonio Brown, which put them up 21-6 at half.

Going into quarter number three, Butker from the Chiefs made his third field goal of the night putting them with nine points on the scoreboard. However, a touchdown was soon scored by Fournette on the Bucs as he ran the ball putting the score at 28-9 in the third.

A phenomenal 52-yard field goal from Succop gives the Bucs another three points to bring them to 31 points against the Chiefs.

With less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Bucs got an interception in the end zone keeping the Chiefs from scoring a single touchdown in the 55 Super Bowl—making the final score 31-9.

With COVID-19 restrictions a lot has been changed to America’s most watched event. The Raymond James Stadium can seat up to 75,000 people, but there was a limiting capacity of 22,000 which is the lowest attendance in Super Bowl history.

Before the game H.E.R. performed America The Beautiful, Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan, two very different genre artists, sang the national anthem and Amanda Gorman was the first poet to ever perform for the Super Bowl as she honored the honorary captains.

Healthcare workers were given free tickets and entered as special guests of the players. 7,500 vaccinated healthcare workers were invited to the game and were honored, celebrated and thanked for their service.

Planning was started back in September for the phenomenal halftime performance by The Weeknd, and he wanted to show how Hollywood celebrities manipulate themselves for superficial reasons. He decided to perform solo this year and he reportedly spent $7 million of his own money on making his vision work for the show.

Not only has COVID affected the game in general, but also America’s most looked forward to commercial. The Budweiser Clydesdale commercial will not be featured this year, and instead they donated millions of dollars for COVID education.

With a 31-9 upset over the Chiefs, the Buccaneers won Super Bowl LV bringing them their second Super Bowl win in franchise history. Brady brings back his seventh Super Bowl win, making history as the first to ever do so!
